All human
verse 1

Sometimes life feels like an endless vignette

I can’t even remember the last time we met

But what you once meant to me didn’t fade

When my life overheated, you were my shade

A whisper trickling through the rumor mill

Carried the news that you had fallen ill

I considered sending you my well-wishes

But I feared that it might be none of my business

pre-chorus 1

I let it go

So I just didn’t know

When you joined the angels I was out in the snow

chorus

Twenty-five years, it still hit me hard

Maybe I should have sent that card

I pray my words would have meant nothing

But a part of me…

wish that they would have meant something

I’m not sure who those words would have been for

Once they are written they risk being ignored

But I know they can also bring heat in the cold

I kept the letters

you sent across the globe

verse 2

My inner life had an audience of none

You snuck in and became the first one

I think that’s why I feel so ashamed

I know you got children, but I don’t know their names

After we split, we stayed in touch

but my few attempts didn't amount to much

Time flew and our stories fell out of sync

Our epilogue was written in vanishing ink

pre-chorus 2

I let it go

So I just didn’t know

When the church bells tolled, I was out in the snow

chorus

Twenty-five years, it still hit me hard

Maybe I should have sent that card

I pray my words would have meant nothing

But a part of me…

wish that they would have meant something

I’m not sure who those words would have been for

Once they are written they risk being ignored

But I know they can also bring heat in the cold

I kept the letters

you sent across the globe

bridge

Lives once entwined

seem to so easily unwind

I refuse to see that this has to be true

But when i visit your grave I’ll stay out of view

chorus - rising

Twenty-five years, it still hit me hard

Maybe I should have sent that card

I pray that my words would have meant nothing

But a part of me…

chorus - outro

Twenty-five years, it still hit me hard

Maybe I should have sent that card

I pray my words would have meant nothing

But a part of me…

wish that they would have meant something

I’m not sure who those words would have been for

Once they are written they risk being ignored

But I know they can also bring heat in the cold

I’ll think of you

when I’m out there in the snow

Notes on the song

This one’s personal. I’ll leave it to the lyrics to tell the actual story.

I was torn about how I felt, what I was supposed to feel and what it all meant. Writing this was my way of working through it.

Once I came up with the “Words would have meant nothing / something” pairing, I realised I could build the whole song around it. But it took more than a hundred edits and rewrites. The theme was a personal minefield. A story of lost love? No. Of broken hearts? Nope. Of regret? Not really. Of admiration? A bit. Of unresolved feelings? In a way. Of sadness and a sense of loss? Certainly. And so it went.

It had to be respectful, honourable and personal, without losing sight of the bigger question at its heart.

The first half of the chorus more or less composed itself. The second half took ages.

At first, the arrangement was far more stripped back and sombre. In the end, I dialled it up. I’m still not sure that was the right call.

Why release it as an AI track?

Two reasons. First, it’s so personal that I struggle with the very idea of someone else singing these words. Second, I think it’s my finest work to date, so it made sense to share it.
