Notes on the song
I wanted to write something light-hearted full of references in order to practice that particular style of songwriting. As a nineties kid, the choice was easy.
To my surprise, the first pass ended up being very close to the final pass. I’ve only tweaked one or two lines.
Even the switch from you got… to I got… was there from the start.
Two references still don’t quite satisfy me.
The first is Dunkaroos, because growing up in Scandinavia, I never actually ate one.
The second is Swackhammer from Space Jam. A tad desperate.
The Quinn one is great though. Stop it.
At this early stage of my songwriting journey, I was still toying with a particular 90s-inspired sound. I’ve refined it since, but its purity suits the theme here. This early on, I also didn’t yet have the tools, experience or know-how to seed or forge melodies, so the hook and chorus came out of pure AI experimentation. Still, I feel the end result is the most natural fit for these lyrics.
Months later, I cut and rearranged a few things to shave off half a minute.
Despite my efforts to avoid it, the vocals kept sounding a little too much like Taylor Swift for my comfort. I had to dig deeper into vocal generation to find something more neutral.
I wrote satire and sketches in the past, so this is right in my wheelhouse. Hopefully it shows.
